Albert passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2015 in Eastern Montana Veterans Home, Glendive, MT, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Albert Lawrence Smith Jr. was born August 6, 1937 in Dickinson, ND to Albert and Elizabeth (Koffler) Smith. He attended St. Joseph’s grade school in Dickinson. At the age of 17, on July 12, 1955, he joined the Navy and received his GED. He graduated from U. S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes IL. He faithfully and proudly served in the Navy as GMMC (gunner’s mate mounts chief petty officer) until September 30, 1974 when he retired. Albert, or affectionately known to his family and friends as “Noonie” or “Junior “returned to Dickinson. As a youth he enjoyed playing baseball and was quite good. He was ambidextrous and could bat, pitch, and catch with either hand. His entire life he enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, win or lose. Mustang cars, fast, sleek and fun were also enjoyed. During his time in the Navy he began collecting coins from the countries that he visited. He continued to pick up the rare or odd coin until the end. Albert was well liked, easy going, and could always take a joke. He enjoyed most mornings at the local barber shop reading the paper and interjecting “ahhh BS” into any conversation that may be going on at the time. He spent time at Walmart and the shopping mall searching for a good bargain or just people watching. He was a very recognized and welcomed visitor to the area shops and local restaurants. Albert is survived by his three brothers: Daniel (Deloris) and Jim (Shirley) all of Grand Forks, ND and Marvin (Desi) of Dickinson; five sisters: Janice Wojick of Cottage Grove, OR, Jeanie Thompson of Fargo, ND, Lucille (Neal) Williams of Darby, MT; Vivian Trittinger also of Fargo; and Leila Tucker of Powell, WY; a sister-in-law, Lyla Smith of Dickinson; niece, Rhonda Smith also of Dickinson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mae Marie Helgerson and Marjorie Jacobson; and a brother, Ronald. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to your favorite military charity.
