Alice passed away Thursday, January 18, 2018 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson.

Alice was born September 17, 1933 on a farm south of Werner to Ingvald and Bertha (Roknes) Nodland. She was the middle child of three, Randolph being older and Irvin younger. Alice’s father passed away when she was eight but her mother continued to live on the farm with her three young children through many hard times. She attended country school before attending high school in Dunn Center. Alice was always proud of being the Valedictorian of her class (4 students). She then attended Dickinson State College and became a teacher. She taught for several years in rural schools in Dunn County and also in Hazen and Killdeer elementary schools. On June 27, 1955, Alice and Edward Darwin were united in marriage at Vang Lutheran Church. In 1964, she quit full time teaching to raise their two children; Linda and Lance. Together, the couple raised their family on the farm west of Killdeer where Ed grew up. The couple continued to reside there until they moved into Killdeer in 2008.

Alice enjoyed being involved in her children and grandchildren’s activities. She also kept very busy with church and other various activities in her community. Alice was a 50-year member of the Happy Homemakers Club. She was also very active with the Women of ELCA, St. John’s Quilters, Killdeer Legion Auxiliary, taught Sunday School, and was a leader for 4-H.

Throughout her life, Alice loved to brag that she was 200% Norwegian as both her parents were 100% Norwegian. She spent countless hours collecting her family’s history and had compiled a number of genealogy binders of information. Alice met a cousin in Norway and together they were able to make the information available in both English and Norwegian. She and Ed were proud to have been the charter members of a local chapter of Sons of Norway. Alice loved to bake and cook for her family and friends. She loved the traditional Norwegian foods such as lefsa and lutefisk. Alice also enjoyed the two trips she made to Norway; once with her mother to meet many of their relatives and once with Ed.

Alice is survived by a daughter, Linda (Mike) Kittilson; son, Lance (Londa) Darwin; grandchildren, Kyle Gosline, Aimee Kittilson, Kelsey Darwin, and Joshua Darwin; brother, Irvin (Kathleen) Nodland; sister-in-law, Ileene Nodland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; and brother, Randolph.
