Allen passed away March 31, 2018 at St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson.

Allen Eugene Opp was born September 8, 1933, to Simon and Marie (Ketterling) Opp, on his grandfather’s farm north of Hebron. Allen was baptized and confirmed at the German Congregational Church of Hebron. He attended school in Mercer County until 1941 when the family moved to a farm south of Hebron where he attended another country school through 8th grade. He graduated from Hebron High School in 1951.

Allen was drafted into the U.S. Army on July 5, 1955. He was stationed at Fort Knox, KY for a year and then was stationed at Frankfurt, Germany. His duties there were driver and translator for company command.

In 1954, Allen met Fern Just at a dance in New Salem. They were married on December 23, 1957, at Peace Church, New Salem. The couple began farming on the Just family homestead and raised two daughters, Jamie and Janet. In December 1988, they retired from farming and moved into their newly built home in New Salem.

Allen loved livestock, particularly Angus cattle and Quarter horses. He began his registered Angus herd in 1951 and purchased two foundation cows from the Maier and Henke Combination Sale, Hannover, in 1953. Allen and Fern along with their daughters, for many years, traveled across the country showing their cattle and attending state and national Angus functions. After 43 years in the Angus business, Allen and Fern dispersed their herd in October 1994.  Allen enjoyed training horses to ride and drive. He took part in many trail rides, parades, and wagon trains.

Allen was an auctioneer and conducted auction sales in the local area. He also obtained his realtor’s license and worked for Bismarck Realty. He was a director for South West Mutual Insurance for 21 years and chairman of the Morton County Weed Board for more than 10 years.  Allen was an active member of Peace Church in New Salem where he served on the church council, sang in the choir, and was moderator for Sunday morning bible study.

Allen is survived by daughters, Jamie (Richard) Fast, New Salem, and Janet (L.J.) Dohrmann, Taylor; grandchildren, Rachel (Jeremy) Strommen, New Salem, Jenna (Brent) Mrnak, Bowman, and Jeri (Troy) Carter, Rock Lake; great-grandchildren; Layton, Harlee, Bennett, Ellis, Vance, Coy, and Rowdy; brothers, Ivan (Linda) Opp, West Fargo, James (Carolyn) Opp, Hebron, Duane (Rita) Opp, Hebron, David (Brenda) Opp, Hebron, and sisters, Norma (George) Petersen, Billings, and Mary Ann Unruh, Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Fern, (3-22-2018); his parents, Simon and Marie Opp; and brother-in-law, Clarence Unruh.
