Allen Gene was born in Burt, ND on September 18, 1933, the son of Lawrence and Eleanora (Koffler) Roll. Growing up on the family farm, he attended country school and later graduated from Mott High School in 1952. In his high school years, Allen was a standout athlete, lettering in football and track. Following graduation, he enlisted with the US Army and served for several years before he returned home to farm with his father. Allen met and later married Ione Oster on November 12, 1957. The couple was blessed with five children. They lived in Burt for several years before they purchased a farm near McClusky. Throughout their lifetime, they lived in Mercer and Westhope ND, Colorado and Utah before moving to Dunn Center in 1983. Allen worked in the oilfield for Koch and his job moved him throughout the area until his retirement in 1998. Allen kept active in Dunn Center’s city activities for over 30 years, serving as councilman and mayor. He was honored as City Council Man of the Year for his time and service. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, West Dunn Rural Fire Department, American Legion and Past Commander.
Allen enjoyed everyday life… dancing (especially polkas), playing cards, pheasant hunting, fishing and anything outdoors. He loved attending auctions and bringing home endless treasurers! He was a great story teller, liked western novels and dogs. Allen was a tinkerer, a jack of all trades, always willing to help whomever he could. He will be remembered for his work ethic, firm handshake and tremendous love for his family.
