Allen passed away at his home in Knoxville on Sunday, June 10, 2007, after battling cancer. Allen was born on Nov. 6, 1954, at Dickinson, N.D., the son of Vincent and Ella (Perzinski) Volesky. He grew up and attended school in Belfield. He graduated as an honor student from Belfield High School in 1972. Allen then attended Dickinson State College and graduated with high honors with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry in 1976. During the summers, Allen was a park ranger at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and helped with operating the family farm in Billings County. While working for the U.S. Department of Energy in Grand Forks, N.D, Allen began working toward his master’s degree in chemistry. He also worked for the Argonne National Laboratory in the atomic energy field in Chicago, Ill. In 1981, he accepted a position in the same line of work with Westinghouse in Cincinnati, Ohio, a position he held for nine years. He then moved on to a new job with Martin Marietta of Oak Ridge, Tenn., where he was a chief chemist. In July 1992, Allen joined Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), which is primarily an employee-owned company of which Allen was an owner. He moved to the Augusta, Georgia office in May 1996 and then returned to the Oak Ridge office in June 2005. He was a senior chemist. Allen was very proud that SAIC is the nation’s largest science and engineering firm and that it had reached Fortune 500 status. Allen enjoyed reading, gardening and traveling, and he had a “soft spot” for animals, especially his pets. He also especially loved and enjoyed his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. His intellect and work ethic will be deeply missed by his co-workers, and his family and friends will never forget his generous spirit and infectious smile. Allen is survived by his brothers, Roger (Darlene) Volesky, Dickinson; Jerry (Teri) Volesky, North Platte, Neb.; and Richard Volesky, Belfield; his sisters, Mary Volesky, Belfield; Margaret (Arnie) Perzinski, Grand Junction, Colo.; and his twin sister, Arlene (Tom) Deutscher, Bismarck; his nephews and nieces, Ryan Volesky, Dana (Ron) Schock.
