Funeral service for Alma Elder, 83, of Bismarck, formerly of Hebron, will be held at 10:30 a. m. CDT Monday, October 19, 2015 at St. John’s Church in Hebron with Pastor Gaylund Olson officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation for Alma will be held from 4:00 p. m. to 6:00 p. m. CDT at St. John’s Church in Hebron. Alma passed away after a long battle with Leukemia on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck. Alma (Fischer) Elder was born August 28, 1932 in Hebron, the daughter of Gottlieb and Dora (Brinkman) Fischer. While growing up she attended country school District #3 and later Hebron High School. Alma went on to receive a teacher’s elementary certificate from Dickinson State Teachers College. She taught in rural schools for seven years. On December 22, 1958, Alma married Alfred C. Elder at St. John’s Church in Hebron. To this union, Mark and Myra were born. Alma was a hard-working woman holding a variety of jobs throughout the years – Chicago Cap Factory, waitressing, a janitor at St. John’s Church and ran a daycare out of her home. In her later years, Alma enjoyed caring for the residents at Marian Manor where she worked as a CNA. In her spare time she loved to sew, hand quilt, embroider and applique dishtowels. Alma later moved to Bismarck where she enjoyed socializing and playing cards with her many Bismarck friends. Alma is survived by her children, Mark (Ann) Elder of Bismarck and Myra Elder of Hebron; grandchildren, Sarah and Matthew Elder and Ryan Stern; sisters, Esther Swaboda of Spokane, WA and Norma Unruh of Dickinson; brothers, Wilmar Fischer of Spokane, WA and Roland (Gladys) Fischer of Mandan. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred (2006); brother, Theodore Fischer; and sister, Dorothea Creel.
