A Liturgy of the Word service for Alvin Reiss, 72, of Dickinson, will be 10:00 a. m. , Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Stevenson Funeral Home with Deacon Al Schwindt celebrating. Burial will follow in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan. Visitation and a rosary service will be held at 9:30 a. m. prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Alvin passed away Monday, January 18, 2016 at the VA Health Care System in Fargo, ND. Alvin Nicholas was born June 8, 1943 in Dickinson, the son of Nick and Margaret (Ehlis) Reiss. Alvin attended school in Dickinson. Alvin loved his accordion and played a lot of old time music and more. He had a band called the Al Reiss Trio and they played for dances all over the Dickinson area. The band members were Al, Jerome Dukart and Linnus Wanner. Alvin turned 18 and joined the Navy. He was stationed at the US Naval Training Center, San Diego, CA on August 23, 1961. Alvin spent time in Hawaii attending radio school. He spent a year on the aircraft carrier USS Hancock. Alvin was honorably discharged from the Navy on August 20, 1965 and returned to Dickinson. Alvin met and married Marcella Obritch. To this marriage, one daughter was born, Norena Nichola Reiss. The marriage lasted 18 years and ended in divorce. Thirty years ago, Alvin met Lois Dewey in Sheridan, Wyoming. The couple lived together from 1985 until his death. They played a lot of music together. Alvin drove truck for a living, also driving the big mine trucks near Sheridan, WY. Alvin is survived by his significant other, Lois Dewey; daughter, Norena Nichola Reiss; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Reiss; nephew, Dennis (Connie) Reiss of Arlington, WA; nieces, Deb (Phil) Knutson of Anoka, MN, and Linda (Don) Thom of Mandan; nephews, Keith (Cindy) Reiss of Dickinson and Ken Reiss of Dickinson; niece, Janelle (Greg) Chays of Minot, ND. Alvin is preceded in death by his parents, Nick and Margaret Ehlis Reiss, and his brother, Anthony “Tony” Reiss.
