Anthony “Tony” was born on his father’s birthday, a New Year’s baby in Dickinson, January 1, 1950, the son of Anton “Tony” and Bertha (Schaeffer) Obrigewitch. Tony grew up on the family farm with eight brothers and four sisters north of Belfield. In his early years, he attended country school and later graduated from Belfield High School in 1967. He continued his education at Dickinson State College. Tony worked as a ranch hand and did logging in South Dakota and Montana. He later made the move back to North Dakota and started ranching. Tony lived a cowboy’s life. He rode saddle broncs for many years and thoroughly enjoyed rodeoing, ranching and living in the country. He ranched with his brothers, Tim and Terry on the Flying Y Ranch and later ranched with his brother, Bud. Tony was a great cattleman and was well known for his Hereford and Angus livestock in the region. He was an exceptional cattleman, always very particular and a to the point operator. He left no gate unchecked! Tony was never afraid to step on a humpy horse and was always at the right spot when moving cattle. Rodeo was the life he enjoyed, whether competing, attending or watching it on TV. Tony’s cattleman expertise and personality will be missed by many in this area.
Tony is survived by his brothers, Maurice (Bernie) of Belfield, Bertram “Bud” of Belfield, Val (Carol) of Sentinel Butte, Tim and Terry of Meadow, SD; sisters, Charlotte Hlebechuk of Belfield, Rose Mary of Seattle, WA, Juanita “Nita” (Curt) Talkington of Belfield; sister-in-law, Ruth Obrigewitch; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton “Tony” and Bertha Obrigewitch; brothers, Cliff (Gerty) Obrigewitch, Gerald “Gary” (Karen) Obrigewitch, Claude Obrigewitch,; sister, Gloria (Jerry) Weber; sister-in-law, Cecilia Obrigewitch; brother-in-law, Albert Hlebechuk.
