Ardis Underdahl

A funeral service for Ardis (Riedlinger) Underdahl, 68, of Dickinson, will be 11:00 a. m. , CDT, Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at St. John’s UCC in Hebron with Pastor Gaylund Olson officiating. Burial will take place at 2:00 p. m. , CDT, in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Ardis completed her tasks on Earth on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Sanford Health in Bismarck. Ardis started her duties on December 14, 1947 in Scranton ND. There she served large portions of joy to her parents, Gene and Lucille Riedlinger, while growing up with her four surviving siblings: Betty, Sherman, Allan and Curt. She expanded her responsibilities in the late 60’s attending Dickinson State College where she became a registered nurse. It is there that she met Aaron Underdahl. They were married on June 27, 1970, prior to his departure to Vietnam. Upon his return, they moved to Jamestown ND where she took a job at the North Dakota State Hospital, treating the mentally ill for nearly three decades. During this time, she accepted all the excitement and challenges of raising her two sons, Brian and Thane. She saw the fruit of these efforts when Brian married his wife Brenda in Albert Lea, MN. After checking the retirement box off from her list, they moved to Dickinson ND to be closer to family. Once that move was complete, they aggressively addressed the bucket list which included cruises, road trips, and traveling to Brazil for their son Thane’s wedding to Helen and for their Grandson Nikola’s first birthday. She enjoyed visiting her mother and in-laws in the nursing home and caring for her brother Curt, after his neck surgery. Between trips, she had small celebrations with her coffee buddies Alice Golik, Phyllis Davidson, and Kathy Knoll and also enjoyed regular visits with Lynn and Karen Underdahl. After re-categorizing herself as a widow and feeling that her duties were complete,she resolved not to leave Aaron alone for too long and committed to joining him in the afterlife 26 days later while surrounded by family at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, ND. She is preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Lucille (Carpenter) Riedlinger and her husband, Aaron Underdahl. Ardis is survived by her sons, Brian (Brenda) Underdahl, Pierre, SD; Thane (Helen) Underdahl and their son (her grandson), Nikola, Denver, CO; her siblings, Betty (Jim) Meier, Murdock, MN; Sherman (Connie) Riedlinger, Williston, ND; Allan (Crystal) Riedlinger, Phoenix, AZ, Curt Riedlinger, Scranton, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.
