Arlene was born on September 15, 1927 in Morton County near New Salem the daughter of John Christ and Eva (Toepke) Kleih. She attended high school in Judson. At age 18 she moved to Bismarck and worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.

Arlene met Warren Rusch at a dance in the New Salem Auditorium. They were united in marriage on June 8, 1948 in New Salem. They took over the dairy farm north of New Salem and improved and expanded it until 1986 when they retired to a home in New Salem. The farm is still operated by Rodney and his sons today. Arlene did the designing and layout of both the house on the farm and the one in New Salem. Arlene had a large garden while on the farm and also helped with milking cows and other farm chores. Along with crocheting afghans and doilies, and doing a variety of crafts, Arlene painted many pictures for her family. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo. Arlene was known for her wonderful turkey dinners, red velvet cake, and her world’s best caramel rolls. She was a life-long member of the Peace Church and the Carefree Homemakers of New Salem.

She is survived by two daughters, Delila (Corrie) Kuester of Minneapolis, Jeanine (Marvin) Van Every of LaCrosse, WI and one son Rodney (Marilyn) of New Salem; six grandchildren Paul (Milica) Kuester, Jamie Kuester, Colin (Karen) Doherty, Emily (Alex) Einerwold, Derrick Rusch, Brandon (Dixie) Rusch, and three great-grandsons, John Kuester, Andrew Kuester, and Regan Rusch.
