A funeral Service for Bennie Schmidt, 94, of Glen Ullin, ND will be 10:00 am CST, Friday, June 5, 2015, at Sacred Heart Church in Glen Ullin with Pastor Marcy Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Glen Ullin Cemetery. Visitation for Bennie will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p. m. CST, Thursday, June 4, 2015 at the Spangelo-Stevenson Funeral Home in Glen Ullin, a prayer service will be held at 6:00 p. m. Visitation will continue on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church. Bennie passed away Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Marion Manor in Glen Ullin. Bennie was born on March 12, 1921 the son of Peter and Dorthea (Fisher) Schmidt in Grant County, North Dakota. He attended country school near the Schmidt farm which was located north of the Heart Butte Dam. At a very young age Bennie enlisted in the CCC which he worked for several years throughout North Dakota. He also spent several years working in the Western Montana Mines. In 1944 he graduated from Reich School of Auctioneering in Austin, Minnesota. Bennie was married to Marjorie Becher in April of 1947. To this union two children were born Doug and Carmen. Bennie began his auctioneering with Kist Livestock in Mandan and worked with them for the next 50 years, retiring in 1995. Along with the livestock sales Bennie also cried over 1000 farm and household auctions. In 1981 Bennie received the title of State Champion Livestock Auctioneer of North Dakota. He was very active in the Glen Ullin Community serving on the Park Board, City Council, Glen Ullin Development Board, Fire Department, Lions Club and a longtime member of the United Church of Christ. He had many enjoyments, having coffee with his buddies, fishing, hunting, gardening and especially playing poker almost weekly. Bennie was an avid fan of the Glen Ullin Rattlers and always showed up with his orange cowboy hat. His family was very important to him, he cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include, Doug (Donna) Schmidt and Carmen (Jim) Geiss both of Glen Ullin, ND; Grandchildren, Chris Geiss, Cody (Wendy) Schmidt and Andrea (Dan) Ragsdale; his great-grandchildren, Brooklyn & Gehrig Geiss, Finley & Piper Schmidt and Madelyn & Maxwell Ragsdale; two brothers, Julius (Mary Jo) Schmidt, Hayden Lake, ID and Richard (Signe) Schmidt, Ft. Collins, CO; and a sister, Lenore (Bill) Craze, Spokane, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marjorie in 2003; five brothers, Carl, John, Albert, Rudy and Willie; and four sisters, Adeline, Clara, Irene and an infant Frieda.
