A Funeral Service for Betty (Gerber) Hammel, 81, of Dickinson, is 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Steven Tangen, officiating.  Interment will follow in the Dickinson Cemetery.


Visitation is Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.


Betty passed away Wednesday, December, 3, 2003 at her home in Dickinson.


Betty was born October 29, 1922 at Lefor, the daughter of Michael and Magdalena Dassinger Herold. She grew up and attended the St. Elizabeth Grade School in Lefor. At the age of 17, she moved to Dickinson where she worked at the St. Charles Cafe. On February 2, 1946, Betty was married to Lloyd Gerber at Dickinson. They moved to the Zander Dairy, where she milked cows for 43 years, raised their own four children and also made a home for her sister, Fran’s children.


The Gerber Dairy was the first modern milking parlor in Southwest North Dakota with all four children working on the family farm. Lloyd passed away in June of 1981. Betty was 70 years old when she retired from milking and moved into Dickinson. On December 28, 1995, she was married to Thomas Hammel at Dickinson. He passed away in February of 2001.


Betty enjoyed playing cards and family gatherings. She opened her home to anyone and loved them all. She especially loved and enjoyed her grandchildren.


Survivors include: a son, Donald (Julie) Gerber, Dickinson; three daughters: Joyce (Duane) Hinsz, Bismarck, Nora (Jack) Loewen, Apple Valley, MN, and Verna (Dave) Focht, Dickinson; special nieces and nephews: Michael (Delei) Lawrence, New York, Gail Lawrence, Oklahoma, Alan (Lucy) Lawrence, New York; two brothers: John (Pauline) Herold, Lefor and Joseph (Phylis) Herold, Dickinson; a sister-in-law, Victoria Herold, Dickinson; six sisters: Katherine Wanner, Dickinson, Magdalen (Martin) Kuhn, Dickinson, Regina Reindel, Dickinson, Rose (Roy) Carlson, Arizona, Evelyn Herold, Dickinson and Angeline Nuss, Dickinson; 14 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Lloyd and Thomas, three infant daughters: Fern, Francis and Florence; a grandson, Roger Focht, a sister, Frances Lawrence a brother, George Herold; a nephew, Tim Herold and a niece Leatha Lawrence.
