Brian died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 22, near Taylor ND of an existing medical condition.

Brian was born on November 21, 1960 in Dickinson to Peter (Spud) and Ethelyn (Waleri) Martin of Gladstone.  He was the 7th child of eight children. He was raised in Gladstone and attended school at Gladstone Elementary, Dickinson High, and graduated from Trinity in 1979.  After graduation he worked for Tri-State Hole Plugging, Eslinger Motors, and eventually found his niche in highway heavy construction working at Martin Construction.  Later Brian branched out on his own starting Heart River Excavating, where he exclusively worked along side his son on a daily basis. Those were his happiest and proudest days.  Brian and Nathan continued with his business until his death.

One of the areas that Brian excelled in was training others the art of professional dirt work.  He was a man who had unlimited knowledge and was a great teacher in many aspects of life.   He prided himself on staying up to date with current events and politics being a disciple of Ronald Reagan.

The happiest day of his life was in late June of 1993 with the birth of his son, Nathan Adam Martin.  Brian enjoyed life whether it was spending time with his son, extensive extended family, or his ever-loyal dogs. He had many hobbies including cooking (self-taught master chef), canning, fishing, hunting, boating (or in his own words he liked to go “laking”), watching and attending Nascar & Drag racing, to name just a few.

Up until the very end Brian was a very loving and giving person whether it was helping stranded motorists on the side of the road, or just friends and family that were down on their luck. He would always lend a helping hand to those that needed it.  Bringing a smile or laugh to others was an art he truly mastered and gifted daily.

Brian is survived by his son Nathan Martin, siblings Patricia (Rod) Kenner, Beulah; Karen (Bob) Good, Dickinson; Monte Martin, Gladstone; Jacqueline Martin, Dickinson; Kurtis (Yolanda) Martin, Gladstone; Vonda (Jeff) Gab, Dickinson; and sister-in-law Cindy Martin, Gladstone, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and his faithful dog Tucker and grand-dog, Apollo.

He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Ethelyn Martin, and his brother Kim Martin and his paternal & maternal grandparents and his beloved dogs Fred and Charlie.

“If my dad had any last words that he shared with everyone he saw, I believe they would have been, “Aren’t you glad you got to see me?” Yes we were, Dad! Yes we were.”

So long “Brian the Lion” until we meet again!
