Carl Edward Johnson, 84, Bismarck, formerly of Dickinson went to his eternal home on December 28, 2002, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Tuesday, December 31, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson, with Rev. Steven Tangen officiating. Interment will be held in the Dickinson Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the services. Carl E. Johnson was born on a farm near Sentinel Butte, ND on April 3, 1918, to Hjalmar and Ruth (Smith) Johnson. He was fortunate to be able to attend and graduate from high school in 1937. In 1938, he began farming near Sentinel Butte with his father and brothers. He married Dorothy Marie Dahlke on June 14, 1945, in Sentinel Butte. In 1947, Carl started his own farming operation. He retired from farming in 1988 and moved from the farm into Beach. In 1991, he and Dorothy moved to Dickinson where they remained until 2000 when they moved to Bismarck. Carl was very active in church and community. He was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sentinel Butte where he was instrumental in organizing the Lutheran Brotherhood for the men of the church. He was a member of the Golden Valley County Welfare Board for 22 years and served on the Golden Valley County Fair Board for 15 years. He was also an active member of the NFO, Farmers Union and Farm Bureau. Carl also sold Lutheran Brotherhood Life Insurance for 5 years and gained many friends and acquaintances during that time. He and Dorothy enjoyed 22 years of square dancing including a trip to the Hawaiian State Square Dance Convention in 1975. While in Dickinson, he was an active member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, AARP, and Sunset Center Senior Citizens. He volunteered at the Dickinson nursing homes by providing sing along music for the residents. Carl volunteered his rich tenor voice in the church choir, and performed as a soloist or as half of a duo for special events any time he was asked. He and his brother, Fiddlin Bill, entertained family and friends with banjo and fiddle music. Carl was well liked and respected by all who knew him. He could talk to anyone and made friends easily. He had a reputation for a very quick mind and his sense of humor was enjoyed by all who knew him. Carl is survived by: his wife, Dorothy; five children, Helen Johnson, Rockford, IL, Ann (Stan Wanner) Bredemeier, Bismarck, ND, Bruce Johnson, Minneapolis, Minn. , Craig (Julie) Johnson, Inver Grove Heights, Minn. and Clark (Lisa) Johnson, Devils Lake, ND; four grandchildren, Meredith (Justin) Palecek, St. Louis, MO, Carisa Carlson, Minneapolis, Minn. , Danny Johnson and Stephanie Johnson, Devils Lake, ND; two step-grandchildren, James Wanner and Jessica Wanner, Phoenix, Ariz. ; two brothers, Bill (Del) Johnson and Jim (Jan) Johnson, Sentinel Butte, ND, and one sister, Mary (Pete) Wirtzfeld, Beach, ND. His parents preceded him in death.
