Carl passed away Friday, June 06, 2014 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson, ND. Carl W. Schnaidt, second oldest son of John and Rosina (Winterroth) Schnaidt, was born December 28, 1916 at the family farm 20 miles north of Hebron by Willow Creek. At a young age Carl along with his brothers walked a number of miles to attend country school and English classes, traveling by horse and buggy during the winter months. By the age of 10 he began driving in style in a Model T having purchased his driver’s license for ten cents. Carl grew up appreciating all that country living offered and acquired farming and ranching skills at an early age. He lived through the Dirty Thirties, the war years, the no crop years and bountiful years. Carl served in the CCC’s in 1936-37 where he was assigned to projects in the Dunseith, ND area. For a period of time he also worked in St. Paul, MN and attended Aviation School in Wichita, KS. In the fall of 1942 a pretty school teacher, Anna Clarys, began teaching school at Elm Creek. Carl and Ann were married August 28, 1943 at St. Patrick’s Church in Dickinson. They lived in Dickinson and on Carl’s parent’s farm before building their farmstead in 1949 northwest of Hebron. They were blessed with four children: Donn and Dave(twins), Frank and Kay. Carl lived a lifetime of hard work and memories, was always a good steward to his animals and the land, and retired at the age of 85. He enjoyed riding horses, hunting, playing cards, working in his shop, and in later years bird watching. He was proud of his many accomplishments, but humble as well. He was honored to have his brand included at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora. He became a resident of St. Luke’s in his last years where he enjoyed visits from his family, friends and especially his grandchildren. He always had a big smile when holding a great-grandchild and would watch them grow through pictures and videos. He kept abreast of the news, weather, and the grain and cattle markets.
