Caroline Steingrueber, 100, of the Marian Manor in Glen Ullin, formerly of Hebron died Friday, December 28, 2007 at the Marian Manor. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Central Time on Monday, Dec. 31 at St. John Church in Hebron with the Reverend Gaylund Olson, officiating. Visitation will begin on Sunday after 4:00 PM at Spangelo Funeral Home in Hebron with prayer service at 7:30 PM, visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be held in the St. John Cemetery in Hebron. Caroline was born April 3, 1907 on the ship coming to America, the daughter of Jacob and Caroline (Kirchman) Merkel. They settled in the Hazelton area where she was raised and educated. Her mother died young and being the oldest she cared for her younger siblings. Her father sent her to work in Hebron at the Culeman Store where she met George Steingrueber. Tthey were married February 19, 1928 at St. John in Hebron. Following marriage they farmed for several years then rented the farm and moved to Washington where they owned a business. In 1936 they returned to the farm near Hebron which they operated until 1952, when they moved into town. Caroline was a member of the St. John Church, the Lookout Homemakers for 30 some years, and the Brick City Senior Citizens. Caroline enjoyed visiting, quilting, crocheting, cards, sewing, baking and music. Caroline is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Leo and Lorrain, of Hebron; and her daughter and son-in-law Erma and Ray Klein of Hebron; eight grandchildren: Terry Steingrueber, Vicki Sass, Scott Steingrueber, Nancy Steingrueber, David Klein, Jackie Lefor, Jocie Klein, and Dale Klein, and 13 great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and three step great-great grandchildren. She also leaves three half brothers: Herman and Art Merkel, both of Bismarck, ND, and Louis Merkel, Rapid City, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant sons, her husband in Oct of 1983, and three brothers, Jake, John, and Christ; three sisters, Christine, Rose and Lydia, two half sisters, Sophie and Emma, two step brothers, Phillip and Henry and one step sister Minnie.
