Carson ?Sam? passed away August 8, 2004 at Dahl Memorial Nursing Home. Carson ?Sam? was born May 9, 1914 in Clayton, New Mexico to Carson A. and Mary Evangeline Strickland Rutledge. He grew up and attended rural school in the Clayton area. As a young man he began ranching with his father during the great depression and suffered through the dust bowl. Sam was married to Neva Simpson and to this union three sons were born, Edward M. , Ivan Wayne and Carl Dean. Sam was later married to Joyce Jones on July 3, 1940 and to this union David S. joined the family. In 1949, he full filled a dream when he and his father moved to Montana and purchased a ranch south of Ekalaka. Sam and Joyce moved into Ekalaka in 1956, where Sam began managing the bulk propane plant. In 1973, they built and operated the Guest House Hotel. Sam retired in 1985; he and Joyce continued to make Ekalaka their home. After the death of his wife of 60 years Sam has made his home at the Dahl Memorial Nursing Home in Ekalaka. Sam enjoyed cattle ranching, hunting, fishing and gardening. He had a great way of telling stories about his younger years. Sam especially loved and enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include, three sons, Edward M. Rutledge, Houston, TX, Ivan Wayne (Jan) Rutledge, Dublin, TX and David S. (Jan), Billings, MT; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joyce, a son, Carl Dean and a brother, Jack. Sam?s family is thankful that he has been released from his debilitating disease of Alzheimer?s. We are grateful to the staff of Dahl Memorial Nursing Home for their gentle, caring service to Sam for the many years he has resided there. They truly are a blessing to the community.
