The Mass of Christian Burial for Charles J. ?Pete? Peterson, 83, of Dickinson will be at 9 a. m. , Thursday, March 15, 2007 at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Austin Vetter celebrating. Interment will be at 2 p. m. (MT) Thursday, March 15, 2007 in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be 10 a. m. to 9 p. m. , Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, with a rosary at 7 p. m. Pete passed away Monday, March 12, 2007 at St. Luke?s Home, Dickinson. Charles J. ?Pete? Peterson was born July 31, 1923 to Charles J. Peterson and Anna (Burns) Peterson in Long Prairie, MN. He attended country school in Todd County, MN. In February of 1940, he entered into the U. S. Army and served in the battle of London and Omaha Beach D+3. Pete earned the rank of PF 6 and was honorably discharged on September 25, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After his discharge, he sought employment at the Hungry Horse Dam, but along the way he stopped in Dickinson and was hired to work on a farm near Regent. It was then he met and married Helen Burghart on May 12, 1953 at St. Michael?s Catholic Church. The couple made their home on a dairy farm near Regent where they began their family. After 10 years on the farm, Pete began working at the Regent Equity Grain Elevator and they moved to Regent. Pete retired after 25 years of service. In 2002, he and Helen moved to Dickinson and made their home at Park Avenue Villa. He was a member of St. Henry?s Catholic Church and St. Patrick?s Catholic Church. Pete was a charter member of the Ulmer Zich American Legion Post, as well as a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knights of Columbus. He was a well-known fisherman in the area and taught his grandchildren and many local children how to fish. He loved to hunt arrowheads and enjoyed gardening, even while at St. Luke?s. He tried to plant potatoes every Good Friday, regardless of the weather. He enjoyed his time with family and friends. Pete is survived by his wife, Helen, Dickinson; his children, JuLann (Scott) Wiseman, Bismarck, and Charles (Sandee) Peterson, Dickinson; one brother, Evan Peterson, Hawley, MN; one sister, Esther Dowd, Santa Barbara, CA, and six grandchildren, Kellen, Philip, Andrew, and Claire Wiseman, and Reed and Anna Peterson. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Royal and Allen, and one sister, Marguerite Ann Abers. Family suggests memorials be sent to St. Bernard?s Mission School, in Fort Yates, or the God?s Child Project in Bismarck. Visitation will be from 10:00 a. m. to 9:00 p. m. Wednesday, March 14, 2007 with Rosary and Vigil Service at 7:00 p. m. at Stevenson Funeral Home. Pete passed away Monday, March 12, 2007 at St. Luke?s Home, Dickinson.
