Funeral Services for Chet Coons, 80, of Ekalaka will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 26, 2005, at the Carter County High School Gymnasium in Ekalaka. Burial with Military and Masonic Honors will be in the Beaver Lodge Cemetery in Ekalaka. Chet passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at Dahl Memorial Nursing Home in Ekalaka following a long illness. Chester L. Coons was born January 13, 1925, the son of Fred and Lena (Thomas) Coons, in the Belltower Community south of Ekalaka. He attended country school at Belltower School through the 8th grade and then attended Carter County High School in Ekalaka where he graduated in 1942. He enlisted in the US Army in October of 1944, and served in Company L of the 148th Regiment of the 37th Division. He was honorably discharged in June of 1946. He met and married Beverly Ann Chenoweth on October 22, 1950 in Vancouver, Washington. Chet worked in the oil field and pipelined for several years which took him to various states in the Northwest. He returned to the family ranch in Belltower in 1957. Along with ranching, Chet worked for the Carter County Road Department for 17 years. Chet was a member of the V.F.W. #7885 for over 30 years; he served as commander for three terms and also served as Quartermaster and Adjutant, the V.F.W. District 6 which he served as commander for two terms. He was also a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, 37th Division of Veterans Association, National Rifle Association, Carter County Chamber, Medicine Rocks Black Powder Association, Carter County Geological Society and the Meadowlark Club. He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Ekalaka, MT; a daughter Carole (Robert) Kittelmann, Cave Creek, AZ; a son, Thomas (Toni) Coons, Riverton, WY; a brother, Harvey (Ita) Coons, Ekalaka, MT; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren with another one due any day. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mildred Lavell and Silvia Christiansen. Memorials may be given to the Dahl Memorial Nursing Home in Ekalaka.
