A funeral service for Chester Gittel, 96, of Glen Ullin, will be 1:00 pm CT, Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Glen Ullin with Pastor Toby Heller officiating. Burial will take place in the Glen Ullin Cemetery in the spring.
Visitation for Chester will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.
Chester passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Sanford Health in Bismarck.
Chester Norman was born November 19, 1922, in New Salem, the son of Jacob and Matilda (Bickel) Gittel. Growing up, he attended country school through the eighth grade. Chester was a hard worker and took meticulous pride in everything he did. He worked on the family farm with his brother, Clarence for many years, helped build most of the bridges on I-94, and worked for the Glen Ullin School District as a custodian for 11 years.
Chester spent much of his free time traveling to the Black Hills and the west coast with his cousins. He loved being outdoors and taking care of his many different cars. Chester’s family meant the world to him and he cherished the time he had watching his grandchildren grow.
Chester is survived by his son; Brent (Jeanne) Gittel of Eden Prairie MN; daughters, Brenda (Scott) Morman of Glen Ullin, LeeAnn Diedrich of Woodbury, MN, and Dawn (Chad) Schumacher of Bismarck; grandchildren, Jamie (Chris) Rittenbach, Dane (Angie) Gittel, Bethany Morman, Jaron Morman, Alexa Diedrich, Cerise Diedrich, Jayden Gittel; great-grandchildren; Dylan Rittenbach, Devyn Gittel.
Chester was preceded in death by his parents; twin boys, Brian and Bruce; sibilings, Clarence Gittel, Irene Skaley, Raymond Gittel, and Loretta Gordon.
