Clayton was born July 17, 1947 at Woodworth, ND to Elmer and Helen (Chapman) Hornung. They moved to Turner, MT in 1954 and he graduated from Turner High School in 1965. He furthered his education at Northern Montana College in Havre, MT, graduating in 1969 with a Degree in Education. On September 21, 1968, Clayton married his high school sweetheart, Darlene Price. His first teaching job began in 1970 in his hometown of Turner, MT. Clayton taught history and physical education and coached boys’ and girls’ basketball. He later moved to Baker, MT where he coached girls’ basketball and was Mayor of Baker for 22 years. Clayton retired from a 43-year teaching career after the 2012-13 school year. During his 37 years of coaching at Turner and Baker, he built a record of 542-290; a 50 game winning streak. The vast majority of those wins (469) came at Baker where he won Class B State titles in 1989, 1996 and 2001. In all, Hornung’s Baker teams won seven tournament trophies.
