Cleo Veeder

Cleo Veeder, 82, of Killdeer passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at Hill Top Home of Comfort. He was born September 9, 1921 at Keene, ND, the son of Edgar A. and Cornelia Harrison Veeder. Cleo grew up and attended country schools in rural McKenzie County. He joined the CCC?s which took him to Utah for a short time. After returning, he worked for numerous area ranchers in McKenzie County. On August 28, 1943 he was married to Evelyn Wahus at Sidney, MT. Together, they farmed and ranched in this area until 1950 when they moved to Killdeer where Cleo trapped for the government along with ranching in the Oakdale Community. He was instrumental in keeping the Killdeer Mountain Rodeo active. In 1959 Cleo and Evelyn moved into Killdeer where they purchased the local hardware store which they operated until 1978. At that time he began working in the oilfield, driving truck until his retirement in 1983. They continued to make Killdeer their home. Cleo enjoyed crafts, making things out of badlands cedar, diamond willow and items with horse shoes. Due to failing health, he entered the Hilltop Home of Comfort in May of 2004. Cleo was a member of the 50 years in the Saddle Club, life member of the Killdeer Saddle Club, Dunn Co. Museum, Killdeer Lions Club, Killdeer Town Criers, 50 year member of the Killdeer Masonic Lodge & El Zagel Shriners, St. John?s Lutheran Church and a past volunteer fireman. Survivors include three daughters: Barb Reems, Killdeer, ND, Edith (Jim) Brown, Spotsylvania, VA and Cynthia ?Sam? (Frank) Ray, Appleton, WI; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn in 2002; two brothers, Lorraine and Pete; and two sisters, Dorothy Lawlar and Vernice Crimmins
