Funeral services for Dale Smith, 64, Belfield, will be 10 a. m. on Saturday, December 1, 2007, at Belfield Lutheran Church, Belfield with the Rev. Roger Dieterle officiating. Interment will be at the Windy Hill Ranch rural Belfield. Visitation will be 12 noon to 9 p. m. Friday November 30, 2007, at Stevenson Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p. m. Dale Smith passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at St. Benedict?s Health Center, Dickinson. Dale Smith was born on February 6, 1943 in New England, ND, to Lawrence and Huldis (Jacobson) Smith. He attended Rocky Ridge Grade School and received his B. S. in Music Education from Dickinson State College. He also received his M. A. in Music Composition from the University of Northern Iowa. Dale married Marge Dennis on June 16, 1966 in Dickinson. They had four children: Shelly, Wendy, Cory and Darby. In 1984 Dale sponsored an Ethiopian refugee, Jemila (Jamie) Mohammed, who became his unofficial daughter. Dale taught for three years in Columbus, ND, one year in Lennox, SD and seven years in Williston. Besides teaching concert and jazz band, he directed many community musical productions and played in weekend club bands. Dale also taught summer music camps near Regina, Canada. He loved the people and students of Williston and also the colors orange and black, which were the school colors. Upon the death of his stepfather, Cecil Geary, Dale and Marge operated the Windy Hill Ranch southwest of Belfield. One of his favorite activities was making loose haystacks with the tractor and loader until his health no longer permitted. On Friday, April 13, 1979, Dale was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He continued to ranch with the use of hired men and purchased a big baler for them to use. In May of 1990, Dale was married to Marcella Wymore. Together they traveled to the east coast and numerous trips to Canada. Dale is survived by: his wife, Marcy; three daughters and two sons: Shelly (Brent) Schlafmann, Bismarck, ND; Wendy (Rudy) Fuentes, Lancaster, CA; Jamie Mohammed (Biniam Legesse), Covington, Georgia Cory (Lynelle) Smith, Belfield, ND and Darby Smith, St. Paul, MN; one sister, Shirley Rains, Bonaire, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Chase, Jamie, Rachael, Felicia, Jayden, Blayne and Kaden and one nephew, Michael Rains. He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece, Lori Roberts.
