David passed away Monday, December 9, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson.

Dave was born September 22, 1951 in McLaughlin, SD to Ray and Mary (Maher) Dauwen. He attended school in Morristown, SD and graduated in Lemmon, SD. After graduation he joined the military and was proud to serve his country in Vietnam from October 1971 – October 1972. He was honorably discharged in March 1973. While in Vietnam, letters traveled back and forth between Dave and Susan Hauge. On December 1, 1973 (40 years ago) the two were united in marriage at Bethesda Lutheran Church. Three sons were born to this union; Casey, Mike and Collin. Following his military service, Dave worked for Evenson-Jensen Furniture until 1977 and farm and ranched from 1977-1995. Dave and Susan both enjoyed the rural life, particularly their cattle and horses. Dave loved his time spent on horseback and continued to ride and share that love with his children and grandchildren. In 1995, they moved to Dickinson where he worked for Fisher’s Sand and Gravel until his death. Dave loved life and lived it well. He loved camping, cards and hunting with his family and friends. He loved boating at the lake and taught his kids, grandkids and many nieces and nephews how to water ski. Dave continued to ski annually on the 4th of July to prove to his kids and grandkids that he still had it. Dave’s pride and joy were his five grandchildren. As a grandpa, he found a new and wonderful place in his heart that was packed full of love for these precious five. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them even an occasional pretend tea party. Dave will be remembered for his fairness and honesty and his wonderful sense of humor.

Dave is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of forty years, Susan; his sons and daughters-in-law, Casey (Brooke) of Pinedale, WY, Mike (Kori) of Lemmon, SD, and Collin (Kelly) of Richardton, ND; grandchildren, River, Riley, Cale, Nate, Tucker Dauwen and one on the way; brothers, Terry (Caroline), Ronnie (Susie), Wally, Doug (Donna), Scott (Gnelle); sisters, Judy (Dave) Anderson, Jane (Rick) Nelsen; mother-in-law and inlaws, Edith Hauge, Jim (Jody) Hauge, Daphne (Dale) Hartman and Jerry (Susan) Hauge; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Mary; father-in-law, Grant Hauge; and grandson, Robert Dauwen.
