Dorothy Kovash was born October 1, 1922 in Dunn County, North Dakota to Louis and Albina (Pavlicek) Kovash. Dorothy was the oldest of nine children. Being the oldest, Dorothy had responsibilities in the house and out in the fields doing chores and all. There was always work to do on the farm. She attended Newcastle Country School, one mile west of the farm for six years. Their farm was the homestead of her grandparents, John and Frances (Kubas) Kovash. At age 18, Dorothy moved to Dickinson and started working in the laundry department at St. Joseph?s Hospital for two years. She then started working as a cook at Messer?s Caf? for 1 ? years. She remembers working seven days a week, eight to ten hour days at the caf?. A decision was made to return to her job at the hospital. It was much easier work than cooking at the caf?. Dorothy married Laudie Hanel on May 29, 1946 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Hradec. They lived on a farm northwest of New Hradec until 1956. For 3 ? years, they lived in Billings, MT. In 1959, they bought a farm from Joe Jurges. Laudie?s health started to fail, so in 1972, they sold the farm and moved into New Hradec. She and Laudie were currently residing at St. Luke?s Home in Dickinson. She was a member of the Rosary Society at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and was a member of R. S. V. P. She was known for her cooking, crocheting, quilting, gardening, and for her love for her family.
