Dorothy J. (Hibl) Kostelecky was born March 11, 1930 in Dunn County, ND, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Kudrna) Hibl. She attended elementary school in New Hradec and graduated from Model High School in Dickinson in 1948. As a young lady, Dorothy worked at Nash Finch Grocery store. She met Edwin A Kostelecky at the Highway Inn and they were married on October 18, 1948 in New Hradec.
Edwin and Dorothy were blessed with eight children: Carol, Sue, Russ, Tim, Dorene, Mary, Mike and Jeff. Together they raised their family in Dickinson. Dorothy was a bookkeeper for First National Bank and Liberty National Bank. She retired in 1992.

Dorothy enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends. Her many delicious Czech pastries and dishes will be remembered and missed! She also found pleasure in quilting, gardening and thoroughly reading cookbooks and the Guidepost. She and Edwin enjoyed traveling in their motorhome to visit family and to attend Czech festivals. Dorothy was a life member of VFW Auxiliary and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dickinson. She was an active member of St. Ann’s Altar Society and Dakota Czech ethnic music group.
Dorothy passed away Friday, October 2, 2020 at St. Benedicts Health Center in Dickinson. She died on an ordinary day, during challenging times as an extraordinary woman. Dorothy was a beautiful woman with a deep love and boundless compassion for her family and friends. She was a gracious mother who provided love and support for her children and grandchildren. Her Catholic faith was very important to her and she most often had a rosary in the palm of her hand. Dorothy’s children thank God for her presence in their lives and she will be truly missed. Her family is forever grateful for the unbelievable care and compassion she received at St. Benedict’s Health Center.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Carol (John) Degenstein of Elgin, Sue (Dale) Klein of The Colony, TX, Russ (Joan) Kostelecky of Dickinson, Dorene (Jeff Thompson) Kostelecky-Wheeler of Elko, NV, Mary (Dennis) Zastoupil of Dickinson, Mike (Bobbi) Kostelecky of Grand Junction, CO, Jeff (LeeAnn) Kostelecky of Dickinson; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
