Dorothy Magelky was born Jan. 28, 1916 on a farm in the DeSart area, west of the Rainy Buttes, the daughter of William and Olga (Blek) Runge. She rode horse to the Reed School in Carroll Township. Dorothy was the oldest of seven children. When she was 18 years old, her mother passed away leaving her to help her father raise her six siblings. She spent her time cooking, sewing, and doing most of the house hold duties until she left home. On October 23, 1941, Dorothy was united in marriage to George Magelky. Shortly after their marriage, George went off to serve in World War II, while Dorothy stayed home helping her siblings. She also worked as a seamstress, sewing children’s clothes for the National Youth Association relief. At this time, a change in her eyesight was noticed. George returned home from the war and the couple moved to Bowman for a short time and then moved to New England. Dorothy and George were blessed with three children, Georgeann, Roger and Marlene. Dorothy enjoyed raising chickens for many years, and worked diligently putting together the family tree books. She was constantly collecting pictures year after year. One of her most loved hobbies was making quilts. Blindness became a reality for her, but with strong determination and a little help, she continued to cut, sew, and tie her quilts. Dorothy loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a loving, kind person and an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed and remembered as a person of great strength and endurance. Dorothy is survived by her children, Georgeann (Albert) Schmidt, New England, ND, Roger (Meredith) Magelky, Parker, CO, and Marlene Wanner, Dickinson, ND; four grandchildren, Jason (Michele) Schmidt, Gladstone, ND, Crystal (David) Sowell, Belle Fourche, SD, Scott Wanner, Dickinson, ND, and Billy (Erin) Wanner, Oregon, WI; seven great-grandchildren, Amber Wanner, Emily Schmidt, Abbygail Schmidt, Chloe Schmidt, Shaylynn Schmidt, Weston Wanner and Griffin Wanner; two brothers, Marvin Runge, Dickinson, ND, Larry (Bonny) Runge, Denver, CO; sister-in-law, Caroline Dukart, Dickinson, ND; and Buddy, her very special cat. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Olga Runge, husband, George Magelky; brothers, Raymond, Ralph, and Roy; sister, Norma Schatz; grandson, Brian Lee Wanner; and sister-in-law, Celestine Runge.
