A Funeral Mass for Duane Hawkinson, 85, of Killdeer, ND will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Killdeer with Father Darnis Selvanayakam celebrating. Burial will take place in Oakdale Cemetery.


Visitation for Duane will be Tuesday, April 11, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., April 11, 2017 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Killdeer with a Rosary & Vigil Service being held at 7:00 p.m.


Duane passed away Friday, April 7, 2017 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Dickinson.


Duane was born in Dunn County on February 11, 1932 to Emil and Faith (Blackburn) Hawkinson. He grew up on the family farm near Oakdale and attended country school. After graduation he worked on the family farm and then worked on a neighboring farm. It was during this time that he entered the U.S. Army. After being honorably discharged he returned to the Killdeer area in 1954. He worked road construction and later worked in the oilfield.


On June 25, 1958 he married Shirley Klatt in Killdeer. The couple made their home in Tioga where they were blessed with six children. Duane worked for various companies driving truck in the oilfield. Duane retired from Black Hills Trucking in 2000. He retired after 40 years of accident free driving covering over 5 million miles. In 2007, Duane and Shirley moved to Killdeer.


Duane’s greatest enjoyment was his family and he treasured holidays and family gatherings. He enjoyed his motorhome and traveling across the country. Duane loved being outdoors, gardening and working in his garage. Branding season was his favorite time of the year. He was an avid Twins fan and made a memorable trip to watch them play at Target Field. Duane also enjoyed watching old western movies. He helped with rodeos in his younger days and remained a fan, especially watching bull riding. Duane was a lifetime member of the American Legion.


Duane is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Diane (Rick) Roney of Dillworth, MN, Cary (Dawn) Hawkinson of Parker, CO, Curtis (Deb) Hawkinson of Marysville, KS, Scott (Tracie) Hawkinson of Council Bluffs, IA, Wayne (Teresa) Hawkinson of Andover, MN; daughter-in-law, Karen Hawkinson of Tioga, ND; grandchildren, Rhonda, Erica, Kirk, Tyler, Ellie, Jaden, Ashlyn, Lauren, Conner, Tanner, Taylor, Reagan, Kate, and Mackenzie; great-grandchildren, Leigha, Lucas, Bo, and Gentry; sisters, Patricia Steckler, and Mable (Dennis) Lund; brothers, Charles Hawkinson, Clinton Hawkinson, Patrick (Carol) Hawkinson, Aaron Hawkinson, Donald (Judy) Hawkinson, and Robert Hawkinson.


He is preceded in death by his son, Duran Hawkinson; sisters, Roberta Hawkinson, Connie Hawkinson, and LaDonna Klatt; brother, Thomas Hawkinson.
