Earl W. Elkins was born on March 31, 1919 at home on the farm south of Taylor, North Dakota, the son of John and Millie (Knudson) Elkins. He completed grade school in Grandvale School District near his home. He attended high school in Taylor for two years and completed his GED in 1962. Earl married Clara Lenz in Taylor on June 11, 1943. They farmed and raised cattle until 1963. During the 60’s, Earl planted trees, worked as a welder, and worked on the construction of I94. He then began his work with the USDA Soil Conservation Service in Hettinger, North Dakota (1963-1966) and then in Dickinson until 1983. From 1983-1989, he worked for the Western Soil Conservation District. Earl was very interested in carpentry and woodworking. He remodeled their home in Dickinson and built many pieces of the furniture. He designed and built a scale model farmstead as well as horse drawn pieces of farm machinery. These pieces are one inch to one foot scale models which are on display at the machinery building at the Pioneer Park by Dickinson’s Joachim Museum. Earl also built a replica of his country school and out buildings which are displayed at the school house in Pioneer Park. As a member of the Stark County Historical Society, Earl did much work on the pioneer house and repairing other buildings at Pioneer Park.
