Edna M. Lawhead, 98, Killdeer, died Monday, January 27, 2003, at Hill Top Home of Comfort, Killdeer. Funeral services will be 10 a. m. , Thursday, January 30, 2003, at St. John?s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Killdeer, with the Reverend Aanen Gjovik officiating. Interment will be in Killdeer Cemetery, Killdeer. Edna Hayden was born to Edward and Lydia (Harding) Hayden on December 11, 1904, at O?Neil, Nebraska. The family moved to Waubay, SD, when Edna was three months old. Leaving there for a homestead near Grassy Butte, ND, when she was seven years old. She attended school in rural Grassy Butte and Killdeer. Edna married Riley Lawhead on June 29, 1925, at Wibaux, Mont. They ranched near Grassy Butte, and later moved to Oregon where they lived for seventeen years before moving to California. While in Oregon, Edna worked as a welder in the shipyards during the war and later as a Department Head in a J. C. Penny?s store in Portland, Ore. She resigned from this job to live with and care for her elderly parents for five years. Upon Riley?s retirement, they returned to live in Killdeer, ND. During their retirement years Riley and Edna were avid quilters selling many quilts throughout the United States. Riley passed away on September 6, 1984. Edna was a member of St. John?s Lutheran Church, Homemakers Club and Thimble Club. Edna entered Hilltop Home of Comfort in September, 1992, where she has resided since. Edna is survived by: her daughter, Arlys Stammerjohan; three grandchildren, Karen, Jay and Robert and four great grandchildren, Mellissa, Lindsay, Aaron and Alyssa. She was preceded in death by: her husband; her parents; one son, Robert; four sisters and two brothers.
