Edward Darwin

A funeral service for Edward Darwin, 86, of Killdeer, will be 10:30 a. m. , Monday, November 16, 2015 at St. John’s Church in Killdeer with Pastor Lisa Lewton officiating. Burial will take place in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND. Visitation for Eddie will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p. m. on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at St. John’s Church with a prayer service being held at 4:00 p. m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday. Edward passed away Monday, November 9, 2015 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson. Edward was born April 26, 1929, in a Dunn County farmhouse, son of Theodore and Rose (Kukla) Darwin. He grew up and attended country school and Killdeer High School. In his early years, he helped with all the work that needed to be done on the farm until he graduated and volunteered for the draft. Edward was drafted into the US Army, serving from 1952 to 1954, including time spent in Korea. Following his honorable discharge as Corporal, he returned home to continue farming and he went to Dickinson College on the days they held classes for the Veterans Training for Farmers. One of the first things he also did was to become a leader of the 4-H Club for the farm boys west of Killdeer. Edward married Alice N. Nodland on June 27, 1955. Edward and Alice are parents to two children; Linda and Lance. Edward believed in volunteering and supporting the community. He was involved in Farmers Union, the Cenex Board of Directors, and was Director’s President for many years. He was a member of the Killdeer Legion for 60 plus years and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, which he played an active role in the new construction of the church after it was destroyed by fire in 1966. Edward was a chartered member of the Lion’s Club, serving as Treasurer and President, also receiving the Lion of the Year Award and the Melvin Jones Award. Edward served as Board of Director for the West Dunn Ambulance and the West Dunn Fire Board, also serving as president for both. He was also a founding member of the Hill Top Heritage Foundation serving as vice president and president. Edward is survived by his wife Alice; daughter, Linda (Mike) Kittilson; son, Lance (Londa) Darwin; grandchildren, Kyle Gosline, Aimee Kittilson, Kelsey Darwin, and Joshua Darwin; sisters, Evelyn (Al) Opsal, Phyllis (Milton) Mittelstedt, Delores (Bill) Stroh; brother, Ted (Glenice) Darwin; sister-in-law, Marian Darwin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Alfred Darwin. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to CHI Health at Home and Hospice and the Killdeer Ambulance.
