Funeral Mass for Edwin “Ed” V. Novotny, 79, of Dickinson will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 24, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Todd Kreitinger celebrating. Burial will take place in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 23, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary and Vigil being held at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson.
Ed passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson.
Ed was born July 21, 1937 in Dickinson, the son of Joe S. and Philomine “Phyllis” (Splichal) Novotny. He was raised in Dickinson and graduated from Dickinson High School. Following graduation, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1955-1958. After his honorable discharge, he returned to North Dakota and attended the State School of Science in Wahpeton for printing. Ed’s first career job began at Doherty Printers in Dickinson where he worked through 1966. He then went to work for Service Printers in Dickinson where he worked for the next 34 years. Ed retired on December 31, 1999.
Ed married Leona Huschka on June 25, 1963 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dickinson. They were blessed with four children; Todd, Dean, Cheryl and Nyra. Together they raised their family in Dickinson. Ed enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, collecting miniature bottles and decanters, and attending Minnesota Vikings, Twins and Wild games. Ed was a member of the Elks, St. Pius Verein, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the St. Anthony Club, the German Hungarian Club, and the Eagles Club where he was a past president and held other various offices.
Ed is survived by his wife, Leona; sons, Todd (Renea) Novotny of Andover, MN and Dean Novotny of Dickinson; daughters, Cheryl Narveson (Glen Huschka) and Nyra Novotny of Dickinson; sisters, Arlene Traylor of Valley, AL and Carol (Drew) Martin of Grain Valley, MO; grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Riley, Justin, Jenna, James, Jordan, Cassondra “Sondy” Novotny and Brooke Ott.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe S. and Phyllis Novotny; sister, Adeline York; brothers-in-law, A.J. “Pete” York and Jim Traylor.
