Elizabeth “Betty” Allen: wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, 78, Dickinson, died Friday, February 21, 2003 at St Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial for Betty is scheduled for 10:00 a. m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dickinson with Father Claude Seeberger, celebrating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery followed by a luncheon at Knights of Columbus, Dickinson. Visitation is Monday, Feb. 24, 2003 from 9:00 a. m. to 9:00 p. m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a rosary being said at 7:00 p. m. followed by a vigil.


Betty Braun was born on May 11, 1924, East of Dickinson to Paul and Mary Eve Braun. She was raised by her sister, Mary, and husband, John Froelich on a farm South of South Heart. She attended a country grade school south of South Heart. Betty graduated from St. Pius Catholic High School in Sheffield, North Dakota. She then attended Dickinson State Teacher’s College and then attended Northern Pacific Telegrapher School in Jamestown, North Dakota. Betty accepted a telegrapher position with Northern Pacific Railway. She worked for the railway until her marriage to Bill Houck in 1947. Her first daughter, Karen, was born in 1948 and husband, Bill, died in 1949. Following the death of her husband, Bill, she worked for the ASCS Office in Dickinson. On April 2, 1951. Betty married Henry Allen from Sentinel Butte, North Dakota. Together, they lived in the Dickinson area and on a farm South of Dickinson for the next 51 years. Here, they raised seven children.


After raising her children, Betty went to work for Woolworths and JC Penneys and retired in 1984. Betty was active as a volunteer at St. Joseph?s Hosp. , delivered for “Meals on Wheels” and was an active member of the Senior Citizens Center Square Dance group. Betty is survived by Henry, her husband of 51 years, and seven children: Karen Allen, Arroyo Grande, CA; Les (Joy), Champaign, IL; Rita (John) Meyer, Minot, North Dakota; Rod, Boston, MA; LaVonne ( Kent) Fritz, Dickinson, North Dakota; Joyce (Ron) Bushaw, Thompson, North Dakota; Tony ( Sharon) Minn. , MN. Betty is survived by 15 grandchildren, Jason, Jeremy, Nate, Arlie, Lydia, Wendy, Robbie, Lisa, Danny, Madeline, Kyle, Chris, Nick, Christie, Tonya and 5 great-grand children, Morgan, Garrik, Cyanna, Parker and Johnie. She was preceded in death by one grandchild, John. Betty was a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother and friend. She loved life and has given her family memories of a lifetime. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation in her name.
