Funeral Mass for Elizabeth “Betty” Wald, 94, of Dickinson, will be 10:00 am, Friday, May 4, 2018 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Father Kregg Hochhalter celebrating. Interment will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Visitation for Betty will be from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Stevenson Funeral Home with a rosary and vigil service being held at 7:00 p.m.
Elizabeth (Betty) Wald entered eternal life on April 30, 2018 after a brief illness.
Betty was born January 11, 1924, the second child of Philip and Lena (Kuhn) Dressler on the family farm near Halliday, North Dakota. She was raised on the family farm and attended school there in Halliday.
In her early twenties, Betty resided for a brief time in San Diego, California and Seattle, Washington. In Seattle, she worked at Kress Store – a store that “sold everything” as she said. When Betty’s father became ill, she returned to North Dakota where she settled in Bismarck and worked at First National Bank. It was in Bismarck she met her husband Wally Wald. Wally and Betty were united in marriage on October 5, 1953 at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck. To this union their two daughters were born, Renee and Deborah. Wally and Betty made their home in a number of communities in western North Dakota, including Manning and Richardton where they owned and operated grocery stores together, as well as the café in Manning, before moving to Dickinson in 1966 to operate The Rancher Motel. Eventually Wally and Betty became owners of Richardton Farm Equipment, and acquired majority ownership of First National Bank of Belfield, which is known today as Choice Financial. It was during those years that Wally and Betty created long-lasting relationships that they both truly cherished. Just as in their marriage they walked side by side, so too, in their business endeavors they were lifelong partners.
Betty had many talents, one of which was cooking, where she made most everything from scratch and spent hours in the kitchen. Her grandchildren will fondly remember her kraut knoeph, homemade farmer hats, and Christmas cookies all enjoyed around the table. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards, particularly pinochle, spending time with family and friends, and dancing with Wally; they were spectacular on their feet! One would regularly see Betty with a rosary in her hand and praying devoutly at daily Mass,
“Blessed is she [you] who believed.”
(Luke 1:45). Her and Wally actively lived their Catholic faith, which led to them becoming founding members of the Church of Queen of Peace in Dickinson, along with investing their time and treasure in Trinity Catholic Schools.
Betty is survived by her daughters: Renee (Glen) Hochhalter and Deborah (John) Weir. Her grandchildren: Kelli (Scott) Schneider; Kenton (Erin) Hochhalter; Father Kregg Hochhalter; Nicholas Weir; and Gretchen Weir; her great-grandchildren: Katherine, Elizabeth, Joseph and Clare Schneider; and Kellen, Easton, and Kyler Hochhalter; one sister, Ramona Larsen; one brother-in-law, Stanley Wald; two sisters-in-law, Betty Dressler and Marcella Streifel; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much!
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Wally; her parents, Philip and Lena Dressler; her brothers and sisters-in-law Nick Dressler (Francis and Lena) and Gene Dressler; father-in-law and mother-in-law Anton and Magdalena Wald; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Baltzer (Helen) Wald, Francis (Sharon) Wald, and Milbert (Sheila) Wald; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Mary Helen (Ted) Olstad; brothers-in-law Mike Volk and Francis Streifel; sister-in-law Irene Wald; and nephew, Russell Dressler.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Trinity Catholic Schools and the Church of Queen of Peace.
