Graveside Rites for Elmer Thomas ?Prairie Dog? Anderson, 83, of Baker, MT formerly of Ekalaka, MT. will be 10:00 a. m. Friday, May 11, 2007 in the family lot of the Beaver Lodge Cemetery at Ekalaka with Pastor Bruce Kolasch officiating. Military Rites will be by the Ekalaka VFW Post 7885 and Ekalaka American Legion Post 60. Elmer passed away Thursday, May 10, 2007 at the Fallon Medical Complex Nursing Home in Baker, MT. Elmer Thomas ?Prairie Dog? Anderson was born November 27, 1923 a son of Thomas Arthur ?Red? and Rita Abagail (Crossan) Anderson on the family ranch southwest of Ekalaka, MT. Elmer was baptized at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Ekalaka on May 23, 1937. Elmer grew up on the ranch and attended schools in Carter County. On March 23, 1945, Elmer joined the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he served on the USS Savo Island. Upon his Honorable Discharge, Elmer was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal. After leaving the Navy, Elmer returned to Carter County where he worked on various ranches in the Ekalaka and Alzada communities. Elmer loved the outdoors, and the cowboy way of life. Eventually, Elmer traded in his horse for a truck; hauling betinite while living at Colony, WY and gravel at Sundance, WY. After his retirement, he moved to Baker, MT where he continued to live until his death. Elmer enjoyed working with leather and in the mid 1990?s learned to do ceramics. He also found enjoyment reading western novels, and in his later years loved to listen to the books on tape. Elmer had many friends throughout his many travels. In later years, he enjoyed traveling with his friend Lawrence Boggs. Elmer is survived by his sister, Rosella Langford, Roy, WA; his nephews, Tom Anderson, Jerry Anderson, Doug Anderson, Doug Langford and Dan Landlord and his nieces, Janice Smith, Jane O?Connor, Kay Orth, Sharon Mainwaring and Sheryl Langford. His parents, Thomas and Rita, his brother, Lawrence Anderson, sister-in-law Margaret Anderson and brother-in-law Bill Langford preceded him in death.
