Elsie, daughter of Anton and Clara (Ridl) Urbanec, was born on December 30, 1926, in Dickinson, ND. While growing up she attended St. Patrick?s, Versippi and Lehigh schools in Dickinson, graduating in 1944. She worked for Cloverdale Creamery. On February 13, 1946, Elsie married Stanley Schmaltz in Dickinson. They moved to a farm southeast of Dickinson and were there for seven years. Then they moved north of Richardton. Here they farmed grain and operated a grade A dairy from 1954 through 1969. At this time they moved back to Dickinson and purchased The Dickinson Motel from Elsie?s parents and operated it for 23 years before retiring. They continued making Dickinson their home. Elsie was a member of Christian Mothers in Richardton, St. Patrick?s Catholic Church and St. Anthony Club. Elsie enjoyed traveling, especially bus tours. She loved to sew and display her crafts in shows around the state. Elsie especially loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elsie passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2002, at St. Luke?s Home. Elsie will be greatly missed by her husband, Stanley, of Dickinson, their children, David (Charlene) Schmaltz of Mandan, Norma (Jim) Myers of Grand Forks, Rita (Ron) Keller of Radcliff, KY, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, Keith (Wendy) Schmaltz and their children Shayla, Sheradyn, and Braxtyn; Staci (Tim) Berg and their children, Jacob and Hunter; Melinda Keller, Amanda Keller, Jessica Myers, and Tyler Myers, two sisters, Wiletta (Paul) Stoltz of Dickinson, ND and Carmen Faller of Dickinson, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents.
