A Liturgy of the Word service for Esther Fischer, 98, of Dickinson, will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 23, 2013 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with Father Keith Streifel celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Visitation for Esther will be one hour prior to the service at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson.
Esther passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson.
Esther McLaughlin was born January 12, 1915 on the family farm near Golden Valley, North Dakota, the daughter of Charles and Rosalie (Rousseau) McLaughlin. Growing up in Golden Valley, she attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Dodge High School in 1933. Esther went to Dickinson State University before teaching school north of Halliday for two years. On September 12, 1936, Esther was united in marriage to Joseph Fischer, Jr. at Dodge, North Dakota. To this union, five children were born, Joan, Charles, Nicholas, David and Paulette. Esther was a devoted mother and housewife. In 1968, she went to work as office deputy for the Dunn County Sheriff in Manning, North Dakota. In 1979, she became a housekeeper for a nursing home in Omaha, Nebraska, where she continued to work through 1984. Moving back to Dickinson, Esther retired in 1986. Esther was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Altar Society in Halliday, ND. She also served as P. T. A. treasurer and as a CCD teacher at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.
Esther is survived by two daughters, Joan Krula of Omaha, NE, Paulette Foley of Mesa, AZ; one son, David Fischer of Grand Island, NE; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; five great-great granddaughters; and one brother, Charles (Rose) McLaughlin of Golden, CO.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Rosalie McLaughlin; husband, Joseph Fischer, Jr. ; two sons, Charles Fischer and Nicholas Fischer; five sisters, Evelyn (Val) Kary, Lillian (Leonard) Wolf, Cecelia (Orrin) Stoddard, Berniece Thomas and Lucy Bruington; two great-grandsons, Blake Fischer and Dylan Krula.
