Ethel Muriel Betts was born April 21, 1915, to John and Ethel (Purrier) Betts at the Wild Rose Farm in Dunn Center, North Dakota. Her dad died when she was very young. Ethel graduated from Dunn Center School in 1932. After her brother was married, she ran the farm for four and a half years with the help of her mother, and two sisters who were 10 and 12 years old, until it was sold. Ethel enjoyed working outdoors. In the fall of 1937, Ethel rode in the back of a pickup to Washington and worked picking berries and potatoes. She eventually got a job hand wrapping napkins for the Crown Zellerbach Mill, in Camas Washington. After five years at the paper mill, she got itchy feet and went with her sister to Florida to be with their sister who lived there. While there she worked at the air force base in Orlando and the GI laundry. She worked keeping track of socks and worked with a mangle that pressed sheets. Ethel?s next move was to California where another sister lived. She worked at a plant nursery and drove two and a half ton trucks hauling GI?s POW?s and supplies. When the war ended, her job was not needed, so she and a friend purchased a malt shop, Betts and Andy?s Malt Shop. She married Morris Knudsvig in Miles City, MT on March 31, 1949. They farmed and ranched on his father?s homestead. In 1981, Morris and Ethel moved to Dunn Center when their son took over the farm. Morris died in October 1, 1998. Ethel made many wood projects for her children and grandchildren and also made many quilts, afghans and sweaters. She enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with her grandchildren, riding her three-wheeler and being with her family and friends and her dog. Ethel entered Hill Top Home of Comfort in September of 2001. She was a member of Normanna Lutheran Church, Hope Homemakers Club and active in the PTA. Ethel Knudsvig is survived by: one daughter, Mimee (Frank) Roshau, Killdeer; one son, Larry (Janene) Knudsvig, Dunn Center; four grandchildren, Mandy (Cody) Francis, Renton, Wash. and Les, Rozlyn and Shantel Knudsvig, Dunn Center; one sister, Ardella (Ralph) Renn, Nine Mile Falls, Wash. and several nieces and nephews.
