Ethel Nelson

Funeral Services for Ethel Nelson, 82, of Grassy Butte, are Wednesday, January 29, 2003, 10:00 a. m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Steven Tangen officiating. Interment will follow at Dickinson Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday from 9:00 a. m. to 9:00 p. m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p. m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel continuing on Wednesday one hour prior to service at the church. Ethel passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2003, at her home in rural Grassy Butte. Ethel was the youngest daughter of Julius and Elnora (Martinussen) Krogh born December 2, 1920, on their homestead at Snow, ND. She received her education at the Snow Country School. Ethel worked for different families doing housework and caring for small children. She was married to Clifford ?Tip? VanHorn in Glendive, MT on September 24, 1940. In April 1946, Tip and Ethel bought a ranch in Little Beicegel Creek west of Grassy Butte. Tip passed away in 1973. She married Palmer Nelson, a life long friend, on November 8, 1975, in Dickinson, ND. They lived in the Badlands northwest of Grassy Butte until the time of her death. She enjoyed gardening, entertaining friends, relatives, and helping her husband on the ranch. Ethel believed in the old western hospitality of always having a hot cup of coffee for anyone who stopped by her home. She was a longtime member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dickinson. Ethel is survived by her husband, Palmer of Grassy Butte, ND; one brother Alvin (Marionette) Krogh of Dickinson, ND; one sister, Norma Neidt of Ennis, MT; one step-son J. D. VanHorn of Marmarth, ND; three sisters-in-law: Norma (Charles) Hedden of West Plains, MO; Myrtle Krogh of Glendale, AZ; Vinette Krogh of Dickinson, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Tip, five sisters: Anka, Edna, Hulda, Karen & Marie and six brothers: Johan, John, Eldor, Hilmer, Fredrick & Fred.
