Ethelyn passed away Saturday, March 10, 2012 at St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson.
Ethelyn, daughter of Emil and Anna (Dohrmann) Stoxen, was born north of Taylor, ND on June 26, 1920, and was raised there on the family farm. She was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Reformed Church in Taylor. She attended school in Taylor and graduated from Taylor High School in 1938. Ethelyn received a two year standard teaching certificate from Dickinson State Teachers College (now DSU) and taught for one year in a rural school near Gladstone, ND. On January 11, 1941, Ethelyn married Leroy (Bud) Marcusen at the Taylor Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, Bud and Ethelyn farmed and lived with Bud’s parents for three years before moving into the house Bud’s maternal grandparents, Knud II and Elise Knudson, built on their homestead south of Taylor. There, Bud and Ethelyn raised their eleven children and farmed until 1981, when they retired, built a house in Taylor, and moved into town. Bud died in 1995. Ethelyn continued to live in Taylor, ever active in the church and the community, until she suffered a stroke in September of 2005 and moved to St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson. While at St. Luke’s, Ethelyn enjoyed every opportunity to return to Taylor for church services or for family/community events.
Ethelyn is survived by children, Sharon (Arnold) Burian; Jean (Leslie) Lorentzen; Noel (Keith) Gunderson; Larry (Margaret) Marcusen; Eileen (Robert) Gjermundson; Leon (Loris) Marcusen; Joy (James) Bloom; James (Jean) Marcusen; Elroy (Chris) Marcusen; and Melodie (Larry) Watts. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and sisters-in-law, Kathryn Marcusen and Nancy and Evelyn Stoxen.
Preceding Ethelyn in death were her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and James Lisko; an infant granddaughter, Stephanie Lisko; brothers, Leland and Laurel Stoxen; brothers-in-law, Ray Marcusen and Clarence Dohrmann; and sisters-in-law, Lorraine Dohrmann and Hazel Harris.
