Funeral Service for Eugene J. Heaps, 83, of Baker, MT will be 10:00 a. m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in the Chapel of Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. Interment will follow in Bonnievale Cemetery at Baker with Military Rites by the Baker American Legion, Fallon Post #35 and the Montana Army National Guard Honor Guard. Visitation will be 5:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. on Tuesday, April 17th, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker with the family receiving friends from 5:00 p. m. to 7:00 p. m. Eugene Jesse Heaps, age 83 of Baker, MT, passed away Friday, April 13 at Fallon County Long Term Care Facility in Baker, MT. Dad was born January 31, 1929 in Miles City, MT, to Willard and Albina (Dvorak) Heaps. Gene grew up on the family farm near Volborg, MT, and attended school through the eighth grade. Dad was a true cowboy, working at several ranches in the area from the age of 14 until age 22 at which time he volunteered for the draft and went to the Army. He was active duty from April 1951 until April 1953. Although never having gone to Korea, Dad stayed stateside and trained crews in transportation and in the operation of Army Ducks on base at Fort Eustis in Virginia. After returning home from his active duty, he met Shirley G. Grant and married her on September 7, 1953. To their union five children were born. Dad and Mom were together for 26 years until her death on September 10, 1979. After his service in the Army, dad went back to his roots and farmed at Shefield and Hathaway. After trying his hand at selling insurance, he began working in the oil patch in 1966. In 1967 the family moved to Baker to make their home. Again going back to his roots, this time in transportation, Dad drove water trucks until 1979 when mom died. He finished out his career by gauging oil for Getty and Texaco until his retirement in 1991. Dad married LaVerna Rae (Bowen) Lorbiecke on August 18, 1984. Dad and Rae made their home together until her death, May 1, 2008. Dad is survived by all of his children Kenneth (Cindy) Heaps of Baker, MT, Diana (Howard) Hoff of Sidney, MT, Rebecca (David) Brown of Belle Fourche, SD, Thomas (Caroline) Heaps of Baker, MT, Donald Heaps of Spokane, WA, and Brent (Tamra) Lorbiecke of Baker, MT; grandchildren Jessica Heaps, Kristine Heaps, Lacey Heaps, Nicholas Hoff, William (Angie) Hoff, Melissa (Joseph) Bueno, Mathew Brown, Isabella Heaps, Stephanie Heaps, Donovan Lorbiecke and Colin Lorbiecke; great-grandchildren Sara Colleta, Jakob Bueno and Seth Bueno. Gene is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Glen ?Babe? Heaps, his wife, Shirley Heaps, and his wife Rae Heaps.
