A funeral Mass for Eugene Robinson, 86, of Dickinson, will be 4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 3, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Keith Streifel celebrating.  Military Rites will be presented by the Dickinson American Legion Post #3 Honor Guard.  Burial will take place in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.


Visitation for Eugene will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Stevenson Funeral Home with a rosary and vigil service being held at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.


Eugene passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck.


Eugene Dewey was born March 23, 1932 in Dayton, OH, the son of George and Juanita (Bone) Robinson.  He grew up attending school in Dayton, Ohio before moving to Dickinson, where he attended Dickinson High School.  Eugene joined the ND Army National Guard as a member of “K” Company 164
th
Infantry in December 1947, serving there until May 1949.  He then enlisted in the US Navy in June, serving for four years.  He did recruit training and machinist mate school in Great Lakes before being assigned to the USS Philippine Sea.  His ship served 20 months during the Korean Conflict, where he was in charge of all auxiliary hydraulic machinery aboard the ship.  After a 10 month extension, Eugene was discharged March 1953.  He had earned many awards for his service.  In July 1959, Eugene joined the ND Army Nat’l Guard in Dickinson.  Again, he had earned many prestigious awards through his years (21) of service, which included the Valley Forge Cross by the Nat’l Guard Assoc. of the US. In 1974 Eugene received the Soldier’s Medal, the highest honor received during peace time.  Eugene rejoined the ND Army Nat’l Guard and US Army Reserve in Feb. 1982, where he was promoted to Sergeant Major (E-9) before his discharge in Jan. 1989, with a total of 28 years of service.


Eugene married Margaret Faller October 24, 1953 in St. Joseph’s Catholic in Dickinson.  The couple moved to Dayton, OH, later returning to Dickinson in 1954, when Eugene began working for Northern Pacific Railroad.  Eugene and Margaret were blessed with four children, Kim, Keith, Kurt and Patricia. He continued working for NPRR until 1987, when he went to work for AmTrack and moved to Milwaukee, WI.  In retirement, Eugene and Margaret came back to Dickinson in 1994 to be closer to family.  He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, camping, fishing, and dancing.  In later years enjoyed reading and going to the West River Community Center.


Eugene was active in his church and the community, serving as committee member for the Stark County Veterans Memorial, United Transportation Union, Elks Club, Eagles Club, AARP, American Legion of Glendive, MT and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.


Eugene is survived by his wife, Margaret; sons, Keith and Kurt (Gale) Robinson of Dickinson; daughter, Patricia (Patrick) Chruszch of Mukilteo, WA; 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his son, Kim E. Robinson; parents, George & Juanita; and sister, Marjorie Hazel.


In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Stark County Veterans Memorial or the Pine Room at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
