Ernest Edwin Schafer, 87, Dickinson, died June 30, 2004, at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Health Center, Dickinson. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, 38 2nd Ave. East, Dickinson, with the Rev. Sharon Norstog, officiating. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Ernest Edwin Schafer was born April 25, 1917, to Arabella ?Belle? (Moore) and John E. Schafer. He was born and raised in the Calvin, ND area where he graduated from Calvin High School in 1934. After working at various jobs between North Dakota and the west coast, Ed retuned to Calvin where he farmed for 53 years. On June 25, 1948, he married Lois Henderson. They continued to live in the Calvin area where they farmed and milked cows. Ed was an active member and Past President of the North Dakota Holstein Assn. Ed and Lois farmed until 1995, when they retired and moved to Dickinson. Ed was a Lifetime Member of the Glenila Presbyterian Church and was a member of Calvin and Border Central School Boards. Ed loved to hunt and enjoyed the Badlands. He was happiest when he was with his family and friends at ?the ranch” near Sentinel Butte, ND. As a young man, Ed enjoyed baseball and pitched for Calvin where they played against teams from northern North Dakota and southern Manitoba. He continued to enjoy baseball and softball through his children and grandchildren, sharing his experiences and watching them play. Ed is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Lois, Dickinson; five children, Barry (Nancy) Schafer, formerly of Calvin and more recently from Sentinel Butte, ND, Brett (Janet) Schafer, Washburn, ND, Janell (Bill) Peterson, Center, ND, Darci (Brian) Wold, Aurora, CO., Dara (Kevin) Langerud, Watford City, ND; sixteen grandchildren, Lisa and Bryce Schafer, Nathan (Esther), Lucas, Abby and Jeffrey Schafer, Marnee and Mitch Peterson, Layne Schafer, Teddi, Drew and Quinn Wold and Devin, Daylen, Dillon and Kara Langerud; two brothers, Earle (Wanelda) Schafer, Big Arm, Mont. and John ?Jack? Schafer, Calvin, ND and one sister, Zelda (Ervin) Rinas, Egeland. He was preceded in death by his parents and son John.
