Funeral Services for Flora Werchau, 98, of New Salem, ND, will be 10:00 a. m. CST, Saturday, February 20, 2010, at Peace Church in New Salem, ND, with Pastor Joshua Eddy officiating. Visitation will be from 2:30 p. m. to 4:00 p. m. CST on Friday, February 19, 2010, at the Elm Crest Manor in New Salem, ND, and continuing from 5:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. at Peace Church. Burial will be in the spring due to weather conditions. Flora entered her eternal home on February 16, 2010, at the Elm Crest Manor in New Salem, ND with her family by her side. Flora Werchau was born February 23, 1911, to Otto and Gertie (Tjaden) Habener in Vela Vista, California. She grew up south of Judson, ND, on the farm and attended country school. On May 19, 1930, she married Felix Werchau in Mandan, ND. They were blessed with a daughter, Jeanette, on April 27, 1931. In the fall of 1951, the couple moved to Jamestown, ND, where they farmed and Flora worked at the State Hospital for 20 years. In the summer of 1971, they moved back to New Salem. In April of 2003, Flora moved into the Elm Crest Manor where she had resided since. Flora enjoyed sewing, crocheting and entertaining family and friends. She was also an avid reader of the Bible. Flora was a great cook as well, cooking her own meals and living independently well into her 90s. Flora?s family was very important to her. She was involved with her grandchildren?s activities and always wanting to keep up with the family. Flora was a gracious, hard working and caring woman. Flora is survived by her daughter, Jeanette ?Shorty? (Robert) Bateman, New Salem, ND; grandchildren Peggy (Gerry) Sprenger, Rocky (Nancy) Bateman, Dale Bateman, and Dawn Bustos; great-grandchildren Jared (Katina) Sprenger, Kimberly (special friend, Kent) Sprenger, Jessie, Ashley and Libby Bateman, Travis and Ty Bateman, Marisa Silvo, Elizabeth Martinez and Christopher Bustos; and great-great-grandchildren Thomasito, Mateo, and Olivia. She is also survived by a special niece, Carolyn (Bud) Greer and special nephew, Duane (Marge) Dettman. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Felix, two sets of infant twin boys, an infant son, Jack, an infant daughter Peggy and two sisters, Clara Dettman and Dora Weber.
