Francis was born in Mumbai (Bombay), India, on October 10, 1928, to Lazarus and Agnes Rose (Gonsalves) dos Remedios, the third of five children and the only son. He received his early education in Mumbai. While still in Mumbai, Fr. Francis earned a BA in economics, a BA in English jurisprudence and a MA in Ancient Indian Culture. He held several accounting jobs after graduation. During 1959 Fr. Francis made a dramatic change in his life by immigrating to the United States. He attended the University of Washington in Seattle and earned a Master of Arts degree in Business Administration. During the summer he lived in Nenana, AK, for 15 years employed by a barge freighting company as chief accountant. Winters were spent in Seattle, WA. He did well economically and travelled all over the world. The next change in the life of Fr. Francis came in 1976 when he began to respond to a call to religious life. For two years he was a member of the Carmelite Brothers of the Holy Eucharist, Fort Wayne, IN. When that order had difficulty with the local bishop he decided to join the Benedictines at St. Mark’s Priory, South Union, KY. He entered the novitiate in 1978 and professed his vows in 1979. Fr. Francis attended the seminary at St. Mark’s and was ordained to the priesthood on December 8, 1982. He did pastoral work in the South Union area and briefly in Texas. The mid-1980’s began the next step in the life of Fr. Francis. St. Mark’s Priory began closure proceedings. During March, 1988, Fr. Francis arrived at Assumption Abbey along with two of his confreres from St. Mark’s, Bro. Basil Kirsch, OSB, and Bro. Juan Diego Kryzanauskas, OSB. All three transferred their stability to Assumption Abbey on August 15, 1988. Fr. Francis began doing pastoral work in the diocese of Bismarck by accepting short appointments as administrator to various parishes—Regent, Glenburn with its mission at Landsford, Flasher with its missions of Carson and St. Gertrude, Stanley with its mission of Powers Lake, and finally Max. Then on August 1, 1995, he was named pastor of St. Ann’s Church, Hebron, ND, with its mission of St. Clement, Haymarsh, until July 1, 2003, when he retired to the Abbey. On July 8, 2010, he entered the Richardton Health Center. Fr. Francis was a peaceful and devout man. He was faithful to his vocation and work. The good environment of his family home is something he was proud of. He preceeded in death by his parents and three sisters—Sister Margery dos Remedios, M. S. C. J. , Barbara dos Remedios, and Collette Vaz, all of India. He is survived by Patricia (Nestor) Mendes, Melbourne, Australia.
