A Funeral Mass for Frank H. Schafer, Jr., 85, Mandan, formerly of Glen Ullin, will be 10:00 a.m. CDT, Monday, May 1, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with Father Jeff Zwack celebrating. Burial will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
Visitation for Frank will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. CDT, Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with a rosary & vigil being held at 4:00 p.m., CDT.
Frank passed away, Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at CHI St. Alexius Health, Bismarck, ND.
Frank Harry Schafer, Jr., was born April 22, 1932 on the family homestead south of Glen Ullin, the son of Frank and Annie (Lange) Schafer. He grew up on the family farm and attended Country School. He went to work at the age of 15, doing construction. He enlisted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge and moved back to Glen Ullin where he married the love of his life, Ellen Metzger on October 15, 1954 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin. He began working on area dams such as, Oahe Dam in Pierre, SD and the Big Bend Dam in Chamberlain, SD. They moved back to Glen Ullin and Frank began cutting meat at the Schafer Butcher Shop and later at Kuntz Butcher Shop. He remained there until the age of 80, when he retired.
Frank loved sports, bowling, gardening, fishing, watching the Minnesota Twins and Timberwolves, dancing and playing pool. He especially loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Frank enjoyed family gatherings, playing cards and games, yard work, and sharing his gardening produce with others. He also liked to visit the Deadwood Casinos. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and Catholic War Vets.
Frank is survived by his wife, Ellen; sons, Tim (Gina) Schafer, Glen Ullin, ND and Terry (Karen) Schafer, Hebron, ND; daughters, Vicki (Leslie) Demmer, Rochester, MN and Sharla (J.R.) Zuroff, Hebron, ND; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brothers, Pete (Elvira) Schafer, Federal Way, WA, Clem (Betty) Schafer, Ephrata, WA; sister-in-law, Maggie Schafer, Mandan, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul and John Schafer; sisters, Martina Bleth, Josie Bailey, Helen Erhardt, and Clara Plunkett.
