Franz J. Schafer, age 85, of Glen Ullin, died Sunday, June 4, 2006 at the Marian Manor Healthcare Center in Glen Ullin. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Central Time on Thursday, June 8, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin with the Rev. Sebastian Schmidt OSB, as Celebrant. Burial will be held in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Glen Ullin with Military Rites By the Glen Ullin American Legion. Visitation will begin on Wednesday June 7 at the church after 4:00 PM with Vigil Services at 7:00 PM. Franz was born at Crown Butte on Friday the 13th in September of 1920, the son of Peter and Katherine (Huck) Schafer. He was raised on the family farm and educated in rural school. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corp and worked at Carrington and in the Grand Forks area. He joined the US Navy on September 18, 1942 and was stationed out of San Diego and served in the South Pacific as a landing boat instructor. On Friday the 13th of August 1943 he married Elizabeth Maershbecker at San Diego, CA. After being discharged on June 5, 1945 he returned to Glen Ullin, where Franz worked at the Geck?s Store and later for the Gambles. He started carrying mail on a rural route for Glen Ullin, delivering an innumerable amount of mail over his career. He retired on Friday the 13th in Sept. of 1979. One of his hobbies was collecting coins. Franz kept busy in the community by being on the draft board, a member of the American Legion, care taker at the park for many years, taking care of the Senior Citizens Transportation needs, and severed several terms on the city council. He was also a member of the Rural Letter Carriers, and the Catholic War Veterans. Franz died Sunday night at the Marian Manor. He leaves his two sons: Robert, and fianc?e Jody Jahner, Bismarck, ND; Douglas (Cathy), Hebron, ND; and five daughters: Darlene (Jim) Myers, Coon Rapids, MN; Doreen (Dennis) Hartmann, Killdeer, ND; Bonnie (Jerry) Kuntz, Hebron; Shirley (Daryl) Schwab, Everette, WA; Karen (Darrell) Goetzfried, Mandan, ND; and Joan (Duwayne) Kinnischtzke, Glen Ullin; 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers: Tom, Dickinson, ND; Edward, Pomeroy, WA; and George, Eugene, OR; and five sisters: Loretta Schantz, Glen Ullin, ND; Alice Boulet, Wheatland, CA; Rose Palmer, Crete, IL; Eva Story, Grinnell IA; and Mary Ann Simms, Roseville, CA. Franz was preceded in death by his wife on July 13, 1975; two daughters: Sandy Erhart and Dorothy Opp, an infant son; one sister Tillie Fullerton; and two brothers: Harry and Joe.
