Funeral Mass for Fred Gengler, 71, of Dickinson, will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson with Father Keith Streifel celebrating.
Visitation for Fred will be 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 10, 2014 at Stevenson Funeral Home with a Rosary and Vigil service being held at 7:00 p.m.
Fred passed away Monday, December 30, 2013 in Rochester, MN, due to complications from Leukemia.
Frederick S. Gengler was born December 26, 1942 to John F. and Esther (Hopfauf) Gengler in Dickinson, ND. He grew up and attended St. Joseph’s grade school. After graduating from Dickinson High School in 1960, Fred entered the United States Navy. He returned to Dickinson after being honorably discharged and began working at Montgomery Wards. On September 26, 1964, Fred married Shirley Splichal. Over the next several years the couple made their home in Jamestown and Williston before moving back to Dickinson in 1968. Fred and Shirley were blessed with three boys, Paul, Brad, and Ryan. From January 1968 to October 1977 Fred served as Vice President in Commercial and Agriculture Lending at American State Bank, Dickinson. From October 1977 to April 1981, Fred served as the State Director of Farmers Home Administration of North Dakota, Department of Agriculture. From March 1981 to June 1982 Fred worked as Vice President and Senior Lending Officer at First National Bank and Trust Company, Dickinson. From June 1982 to June 1986 he served as President at Western Savings Credit Union, Dickinson. From July 1986 to December 1986, he served as Executive director of ABLE Inc. From 1986 to the present, Fred owned and operated Big Sky Real Estate. He has also been a Xerox agent for the last 20 years, servicing western North Dakota and eastern Montana. Fred served two terms on the Dickinson City Commission, 1974-1977, and 1990 – 1994 as well as one term as Mayor from June 1996 to June 2000. Over the years Fred served on various boards such as: Member of St. Joseph’s Hospital Advisory Board, Member of Advisory Board of Directors at Bank of North Dakota, board member of the Dickinson Civil Service Commission, board member of the Governor’s Employment and Training Forum, board member of the Dickinson Convention and Visitors Bureau, board member of ABLE Inc. , Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Board Member of Dickinson Golf Association, Board of Directors, Jaycees of Williston, ND. Fred was currently serving on the Roosevelt Custer Regional Council and as President of Elder Care Board. If you knew Fred, you knew he loved fishing. He was never without a fish story or a picture to prove it. Fred was a people person, taking interest in everyone he met. There weren’t any strangers left at the transplant center and hospital where Fred spent the last six months, eventually everyone knew Fred. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, woodworking, as well as following sports and current events, but politics always remained his passion. Fred and Shirley greatly enjoyed their trip to France in May, only a couple months before he was diagnosed with cancer. His dream was to go back someday, especially when he found out that there would be another grandchild.
Fred is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley; sons, Paul (Tanya) Gengler, Dickinson; Brad (Shannon Holte) Gengler, Grand Forks, ND; Ryan (Aleica) Gengler, Esperaza, France; granddaughter, Madison and a new grandchild in July; siblings, John (Mary) Gengler, Richardton, Kathy (Cliff Grad) Reisenauer, Dickinson; Claudia Zimmer, Omaha, NE; Paula (Roger) Cymbaluk, Williston; Annie (Van) Barker, Sioux City, IA; Mark (Deborah) Gengler, Albany, OR; Esther Gengler, Dickinson; Jim (Mary) Gengler, Ft. Rice, ND; Bob Gengler, Dickinson; Chad (Cathy) Gengler, North Glenn, CO; Mel (Keith Wosepka) Gengler, Sheridan, WY; Belinda (Bill) Suter, Beulah, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Tim Gengler, Dickinson.
