Gene passed away peacefully on Friday, April 5, 2019 surrounded by family members and his loving, caring Staff of KALIX in Minot.

Gene was born May 4, 1959, to Anton and Mary (Kolar) Splichal.  He started his education as one of the original students at Anchorage School and graduated from Dickinson High School.  In 1981, Gene moved to Minot to become a resident of Minot Vocational Adjustment Workshop, now known as KALIX.  He has been a member of this organization ever since and Minot soon became HIS home.  He lived in Independent settings for many years.  In recent years, due to failing health, he lived in their group homes receiving wonderful, caring assistance.

He lived an active full life there.  He worked at various places through the years – Minot AFB, Walmart, Roll-N-Pin Restaurant and the Vocational Workshop.  Special Olympics was important to him, participating in softball, basketball, bowling and track.  He performed in enjoyable, hilarious plays with the Mouse River Theatre.  He was fortunate to go on many Sun Dial trips to Vikings and Twins games, NASCAR races in Las Vegas, Dollywood and Country Western Concerts.  He loved Second Story which was their Club.  He has many trophies proving he was the “Pool Champ”!  He loved Sunday Minot car races and Taco Tuesday’s.   He was proud of volunteering for Meals on Wheels for several years.

His family meant so much to Gene and he always looked forward to coming home for family celebrations, the holidays and especially weddings.  He loved the wedding dances.  He enjoyed receiving gifts but he also loved giving them.  He was so proud to watch people open his gifts.

It was rare to see him wearing anything but Vikings, Twins and NASCAR (Tony Stewart) clothing if he had the choice.  He was their biggest fan.

Gene was a jokester, loved to laugh and pull pranks on family and friends and then start that Great Giggle or sly smile when he thought he pulled them off so, of course, he enjoyed April Fools Day.  We always expected a call from him that day.  He could never get or give enough hugs.  He loved his nieces and nephews and they loved their Uncle Gene!

Gene had a stubborn streak about certain things when he knew what he wanted but he taught our family how to love and accept everyone for who they are. Rest in Peace Gene. We will miss you.

Gene is survived by his sisters, Jerri Schulz of Bismarck, Marlene (Dave Hoffman) of SC, Darlene (Jim Schwartz) of Dickinson, Rita (Ron Kostelecky) of CA, Mary Ann (Mike Schwindt) of Dickinson, Connie (Ken Stockert) of Dickinson; sister-in-law, Bonnie Splichal of PA; three aunts and one uncle; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and beloved friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Donna; brothers, Don and Dean; brother-in-law, Larry Schulz.
