Funeral Service for George S. ?Stub? Askin, 86, of Ekalaka, MT will be 10:00 a. m. on Thursday, July 15, 2010, in the Chapel of Stevenson Funeral Home in Ekalaka. Interment will follow in the family lot in Beaver Lodge Cemetery at Ekalaka. Military Rites will be provided by the Ekalaka American Legion Post #60, Ekalaka VFW Post #7885 and the Montana National Guard Honor Guard. Visitation will be 3:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. on Wednesday, July 14th, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Ekalaka. Stub passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2010, at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker, MT. George S. ?Stub? Askin was born on June 25, 1924, in Kelso, WA a son of Henry L. and Marguerite (Husted) Askin. Shortly after his birth, the Askin family moved to the Ismay and Ekalaka area where Stub grew up on his parent?s ranch. Stub graduated from the Carter County High School in Ekalaka. On September 16, 1944, Stub joined the United States Army serving during WWII. Stub was part of the infantry that landed on the beach of Okinawa, where he was severely wounded in action. Upon his Honorable Discharge in 1945, Stub was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice given to his country. Stub was extremely proud of his country. Following his discharge, Stub retuned to Ekalaka where he would marry Gladys Rosella Gross. They were married on March 12, 1946 in Baker, MT. to this union, Jerry, Jon and Scott were born. Stub and Gladys made their home on the Askin ranch until 1958, when they moved into Ekalaka. Stub was elected Carter County Assessor, a position he served in until his retirement in the mid 1980?s. He also served as the Mayor of Ekalaka for many years. After his retirement, Stub continued his passion for raising quarter horses. If you attended a rodeo in the area you were sure to see an Askin raised horse in the arena. Stub was a terrific horseman, considering his disability and enjoyed the sport of rodeo and being involved in it. For over 50 years he led the horse carrying the ?Empty Saddle Flag? in the parades in Ekalaka. Besides his involvment in rodeo, Stub was a member of the Ekalaka American Legion, Ekalaka VFW, the Disabled American Veterans and the Ekalaka Lions Club. Stub is survived by his wife, Gladys of Ekalaka; three sons, Jerry (Jill) Askin, Belgrade, MT, Jon (Kathy) Askin, Kennewick, WA and Scott (Sandra) Askin, Richland, WA; his siblings, Tuffy (Rosalie) Askin, St. George, UT, Chub (Marlie) Askin, Livingston, MT, Ping (Gloria) Askin, Baker, MT, Chunk (Sandy) Askin, Starks, LA and Cheryl (Joe) Whitney of Fallon, MT; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Hank Askin, three sisters, Bonnie Rivera, Neva Dietz and Marguerite Askin and his daughter-in-law, Christine Askin.
